The Legend of Tanabata >
Orihime, the beautiful weaver princess, was the daughter of the Heavenly Emperor. She spent her days by the Amanogawa River (the Milky Way), weaving magnificent garments from starlight. However, despite her diligence, she was lonely and longed for love.
Beyond the river lived Hikoboshi, a young herdsman who tended his cattle beneath the vast night sky. He was a humble man with a pure heart, who cherished the silence of the night.
One day, the Heavenly Emperor saw how sad his daughter was and allowed her to meet Hikoboshi. When they saw each other for the first time, they fell madly in love. Their love was so deep that they forgot all their duties – Orihime stopped weaving, and Hikoboshi neglected his cattle.
The Heavenly Emperor was furious at their neglect and separated them. Orihime was banished to one side of the Amanogawa, while Hikoboshi had to remain on the other. The river of stars now lay between them.

Only if the night remained clear could they reunite across a bridge of magpies >>> Since then, people in Japan celebrate the Tanabata Festival. They write wishes on colorful paper strips and hang them on bamboo branches, hoping that their desires will come true – just as Orihime and Hikoboshi hope for their reunion. |
Momotarō - The Peach Boy
Once upon a time, there lived an elderly couple who had no children. One day, the old woman found a giant peach floating down the river. When she brought it home and her husband cut it open, a strong boy jumped out – Momotarō.
As Momotarō grew up, he heard of evil Oni (demons) terrorizing the land. Determined to defeat them, he set out on a journey. His parents gave him rice cakes (Kibidango) for the road. Along the way, he met a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant, who joined him after he shared his Kibidango with them.
On the Demon Island, Momotarō and his companions faced the Oni. With courage, cleverness, and the power of friendship, they defeated the demons and brought their treasures home.
With the recovered riches, Momotarō and his parents lived happily ever after, and the land remained at peace.

Old Woman: (sighs) Another day, another chore. If only we had a child to bring joy into our lives.
Old Man: (nodding) The house is quiet, and our hearts are heavy with longing.
(Suddenly, a giant peach floats down the river. The old woman gasps and pulls it to the shore.)
Old Woman: A peach! And such a grand one! Surely, this is a gift from the heavens.
(She carries it home, and when the old man cuts it open, a boy leaps out.)
Momotarō: (cheerfully) Greetings, Father! Greetings, Mother! I have come to be your son!
Old Man: (stunned) A child… from a peach? Truly, the gods have blessed us!
(They embrace the boy, their hearts filled with joy.)
Act 2: The Journey Begins
(Scene: Momotarō has grown into a strong young man. He stands before his parents.)
Momotarō: Mother, Father, I have heard of demons who terrorize our land. I must go and defeat them.
Old Woman: (worried) But you are still so young!
Old Man: (nodding) Take these Kibidango, our special rice cakes, to give you strength.
(Momotarō bows and sets off on his journey.)
(On the road, he meets a hungry dog.)
Dog: (whining) Young warrior, what do you carry? Share your food, and I will serve you.
Momotarō: Here, a Kibidango for you. Walk by my side!
(The dog joins him. They soon meet a monkey.)
Monkey: (grinning) A noble quest you have! Give me a Kibidango, and I shall aid you.
Momotarō: Join us, and let us fight together!
(The monkey joins. Soon, they meet a pheasant.)
Pheasant: (fluttering) Brave warrior, share your food! I will be your eyes in the sky.
Momotarō: Then take this Kibidango and fly with us!
(With his animal companions, Momotarō marches toward the island of demons.)
Act 3: The Demon Island
(Scene: The island fortress of the Oni. A fearsome Demon Lord sits on a throne, laughing with his minions.)
Demon Lord: Who dares to challenge us? We are invincible!
(Momotarō and his companions arrive.)
Momotarō: I, Momotarō, have come to end your reign of terror!
Demon Lord: (laughing) You? A mere boy? Let us see if you can fight!
(Battle ensues. The dog bites, the monkey dodges and claws, and the pheasant pecks at the demons’ eyes. Momotarō wields his sword and fights fiercely.)
(The Demon Lord falls to his knees.)
Demon Lord: Spare us! We surrender!
Momotarō: Promise to never harm the people again, and I shall spare you.
(The demons bow and present their treasures as tribute.)
Act 4: The Triumphant Return
(Scene: Momotarō returns to the village, carrying treasure. The old couple weeps with joy.)
Old Woman: You have returned safely!
Old Man: Our son, our hero!
(The villagers cheer as peace is restored. Momotarō stands tall, his companions by his side.)
Momotarō: Evil has been vanquished, and the land is safe once more!
(The curtain falls as the people celebrate, and Momotarō's tale becomes legend.)

Urashima Tarō

Urashima Tarō was taken to the magnificent Ryūgū-jō palace. There, he met the beautiful princess Otohime and spent blissful days in the underwater world.
After a while, Urashima Tarō longed for home. Otohime gave him a mysterious box (Tama-tebako) and warned him: "Never open it." When he returned to land, everything had changed – centuries had passed, and no one recognized him.
Desperate, Urashima Tarō opened the box. A white mist rose, and he aged in an instant. He was carried away by the wind – a man from a time long gone.
